Usually, the goal of bankruptcy is to get rid of debts. When you eliminate debts at the end of your bankruptcy case, this is called the bankruptcy discharge. Before you file for bankruptcy, it's important to know:

  • which debts are discharged in bankruptcy, and which are not
  • how the bankruptcy discharge works in both Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy, and
  • whether a creditor or the bankruptcy trustee is likely to challenge the dischargeability of a debt (or all of your debts), this is called objecting to discharge.
